Description

Hand-picked between 3 and 11 April at 12.6–13.2 baume, the fruit was naturally fermented with an average of 15% whole bunch, varying between 0 and 45% across individual ferments. Extraction was gentle, with minimal pump-overs, before pressing after 21 days on skins. The wine matured for ten months in French oak (40% new) and was bottled unfined.

Winemaker and owner Jonny Hughes puts the site’s distinctive tannin structure down to low yields, high UV reflected off the water and a long, cool ripening season; “Partly due to low yields and partly due to that high UV from the reflection off the water, and that long, long, long ripening season, structurally we can get a lot of tannin and our berries are very small, so we get a really high skin to juice ratio off this site, which I think is a big part of what the Pinot looks like.” – Jonny Hughes

About the winemaker

Brothers Matthew and Jonathan Hughes established the Mewstone Vineyard in 2011 on the banks of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel, south of Hobart and across from Bruny Island. Matthew recalls that tasting a now-defunct label from a vineyard planted in this same subregion inspired them to purchase a nearby property, once a cherry orchard, and begin planting for Mewstone.

In addition to the Mewstone wines they produce a second range called hughes + hughes, crafted from a selection of vineyards across Tasmania, including the Coal River, Derwent Valley, North West, and D’Entrecasteaux Channel regions.
