The piece
David Mellor (1930–2009) was one of Britain's great post-war designers, best known for his cutlery. His son Corin Mellor now leads the company from its Round Building factory in Hathersage, in the Peak District. Corin Mellor designed this pestle and mortar in heavyweight hand-turned black granite.
In use
Crack a few Pep peppercorns, crush a clove of garlic or grind a pinch of spice for one dish. For pesto and bigger batches, see the medium size.
