Boy does Flanders do good Chardonnay.

This 2022 release is racy, energetic and fine, with intensely concentrated citrus and floral aromas kissed by notes of fennel and rocky minerals. There’s a terrific wave of acidity, here dicing the wine’s svelte texture with tensile vigour before a finish of citrus-fuelled energy. If this all sounds too to be true for a wine of this price, it isn’t.

The best value Chardonnay on the peninsula.

Description

Garagiste Le Stagiaire Chardonnay 2022

Fruit sourced from sites in Tuerong, Merricks and Balnarring, which have an average vine age of 25 years.  

The fruit was sorted in both the vineyard and winery and whole-bunch pressed directly to 500-litre puncheons. Fermentations were natural, with no temperature control, and were followed by an eight-month élevage on gross lees to slowly build richness.

As with the Pinot Noir, there’s a terrific wave of acidity, here dicing the wine’s fleshy, svelte texture with tensile vigour before a stadium finish of citrus-fuelled energy.

If this all sounds too to be true for a wine of this price, it isn’t.  The best value Chardonnay on the peninsula.  

About Garagiste

Barnaby Flanders was a co-founder of Allies Wines in 2003, with some of the wines made under the Garagiste label. Allies has now gone its own way and Barnaby has a controlling interest in the Garagiste brand.

The focus is on the Mornington Peninsula. The grapes are hand-sorted in the vineyard and again in the winery. Chardonnay is whole-bunch pressed, barrel-fermented with wild yeast in new and used French oak, mlf variably used, 8–9 months on lees.  Seldom fined or filtered.
